Open Science: Citizen Science and Open Education Resources

On April 15th at 10:00 NL / 11:00 EE / 09:00 UK we will have the final Open Science workshop! On popular demand, the themes of this workshop will be Citizen Science and Open Education Resources (OER), two very important topics when it comes to making science accessible to the whole population. We will have talks and a discussion with experts Yvonne Kuiper (Donders CityLab), Marc van Oostendorp (Radboud University) and Monique Schoutsen (Radboud University Library).

We will start with a introductory block by Professor Marc van Oostendorp, who has experience in both domains, and will lay out the basic concepts and main differences between these two aspects of Open Science.

We will continue with a block on Open Education Resources, with OER expert from the Radboud Library, Monique Schoutsen. She will tell us in more detail what is understood under OER, how to contribute to them, and why. Topics that will be discussed in this part are "Should researchers also take credit for regularly updating educational material?" and "Are the materials of students good enough to serve as an Open Education Resource?"

The final block will be on Citizen Science with Yvonne Kuiper, from the Donders Institute's Citizen Science initiative Donders CityLab. In this block we will discuss themes such as "What is Citizen Science, and what's in it for the scientist?" and "How to involve the public in science, and engage scientists with the public?", and most importantly Yvonne will show us examples of successful Citizen Science projects, such as the Brain Museum in Nijmegen, and give advise on how to set up your own. Afterwards, there is ample time for your own input and discussion.
