The University of Tartu has been the leading university in Estonia since 1632. The University of Tartu’s research-based education is designed to prepare researchers for global challenges. The University of Tartu supports research projects in four broad areas: natural and exact sciences, medical sciences, social sciences and humanities.

The Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics

The Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics covers a broad range of linguistic topics, focusing on Estonian and other Finno-Ugric languages as well as other languages. We teach Estonian and several other Finno-Ugric languages. Our linguistic research and teaching quality is evident from our placement in the top quarter of the best 1000 universities in linguistics (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021). Our researchers investigate aspects of morphosyntax, semantics and phonetics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and computational linguistics. The institute is also the host of the Centre for Digital Humanities and Information Society, which focuses on combining humanities knowledge with digital skills.
